Study Tree

In short: it's our exploit playbook overlaid on YOUR game — a map of the situations where players at your level make the most mistakes, showing how much you're (or aren't) capitalizing on each one.

The idea behind it (read this first)

Most apps give you numbers about you. The Study Tree does the opposite: it starts from the mistakes of the field — the population of players at your level.

We took a huge volume of real hands from the micros (NL2 to NL50) and mapped where that population makes systematic mistakes: where it folds too much, where it calls too much, where it doesn't bet the value it should. That research produced an exploit strategy — the right play to punish each of those mistakes. It's our "Blueprint."

The Study Tree takes that Blueprint and overlays it on your hands. The result answers the question that matters: "In the situations where the field gives away chips, am I taking those chips — or leaving them on the table?"

This isn't "right vs. wrong by GTO." It's "the field messes up this way → you punish it this way." The yardstick is the money the population at your level drops, not theoretical equilibrium.

How the map is built

The map crosses two things:

  • The situation (the rows): the type of pot and your position. They're grouped into three blocks — Single-raised pot (you opened or called an open), 3-bet pot and 4-bet pot — and each row states in plain language what happened ("You opened and got called, out of position") along with the technical code next to it ("SRP OOP PFR"), so you pick up the jargon along the way.
  • The flop texture (the columns): the type of board. There are 9 families — Ace-high dry, High-card dry, Connected broadway, Connected middle, Low dry, Two-tone with a draw, Monotone, Paired high and Paired low — with a sample flop under each one (e.g., Ace-high dry → A♣ 9♦ 5♠).

Each cell is where the two meet: a concrete situation on a specific flop type.

What the numbers in the cell mean

Each cell has two numbers, and it's the two together that make it click:

  • On top, the hit rate (%): of every time that opportunity came up, how many times you made the play that punishes the field. The cell's color follows this number:
    • 🟢 Green (≥ 70%) — you're already exploiting this spot well.
    • 🟡 Yellow (55–69%) — room to improve.
    • 🔴 Red (< 55%) — there's money sitting here.
    • Gray — still too few hands; the score only shows up with a reliable sample (we don't trust 2–3 hands).
  • Below, your actual result there, in bb/100: how much you won or lost in that spot, normalized per 100 hands. It's the number that closes the loop.

Why look at both together

The rate tells you if you played the exploit; the bb tells you if it's making or costing you chips. They don't always move together, and that's where the learning is:

  • Green with negative bb — you're playing it right but losing there. It's almost always variance (these are big, postflop pots) or a villain who doesn't fit the field pattern. Don't change your line because of a bad bb reading on a small sample.
  • Red with positive bb — be careful: you might be "winning wrong" (a result that doesn't hold up). This is where the fix pays off the most long term.

The bb only shows up with a reliable sample, and the drill-down shows the raw total ("−150 bb in this spot"). Since these are big postflop pots, bb/100 values are naturally high and swing more — read it as actual result, not a win-rate projection.

How to use it (step by step)

  1. Go to Study → Diagnosis → Study Tree.
  2. Start with "Your worst branches" at the top: the 3 spots where you leave the most exploit on the table, already picked for you. The tree points — you don't have to hunt through the table.
  3. Click "Study this branch" (or any cell on the map). It opens the mini-lesson for that spot:
    • The situation — the scene of the hand and what defines that flop.
    • Who this flop favors — the read on the texture (who has the edge there and why).
    • Your score here — how many you punished and how many you left on the table.
  4. Right below, your real hands are split into two rows: "Where you left it on the table" (study these first) and "Where you punished it." Each card is one hand (not a loose decision) and shows the result in bb in the corner — even if a hand got feedback on more than one street, it shows up once, with the streets flagged.
  5. Click a hand to open the replay. The engine's hints come street by street (flop, turn, river) — what the field does wrong on each one, what your hand did and the right line.
  6. Take the fix to Training and lock it in.

How to turn this into chips

  • Attack red one at a time. Don't try to fix the whole map at once. Pick a red branch with a good sample, study the "left on the table" hands for a few days of play, and come back to see the color change.
  • Read the pattern, not just the hand. If you're red on "Two-tone with a draw" across several pots, the problem isn't one hand — it's how you play dynamic boards. That's gold: one fix cleans up dozens of spots.
  • Green teaches too. Seeing where you're already green shows your strong game — trust it and repeat it.
  • Come back after importing more hands. More volume means a more reliable score and fewer gray cells.

Common questions

  • Is this GTO? No. GTO plays to avoid being exploited. The Study Tree does the opposite: it targets the real mistakes of the population at your level so you can profit off of them. They're complementary tools — GTO/range study lives in Ranges.
  • Where does the score come from? From the exploit engine (the "Blueprint"), which reads every postflop decision in your hands by board texture and compares it with the play that punishes the field. It's precomputed — it costs nothing to open.
  • Why are some cells gray? Small sample. The score only appears from 4 hands in that spot onward, so it doesn't give you a read based on nothing.
  • Where do I see the overall score by decision type? In the Exploits tab — it gives your score by type of play (value, bluff, fold…). The Study Tree organizes it by flop texture; Exploits, by decision type. Two lenses on the same engine.
  • Do I need Pro? Yes. The Study Tree is part of the full Diagnosis, on the Pro plan.
